Gold Ball in Hand, Penquis' Head Coach Announces Retirement

MILO - As the high school basketball season wound down, Penquis Head Coach Tony Hamlin realized that to reach 400 career wins, his Patriots would have to run the table.
With the odds stacked against them, Hamlin thought he'd be worrying about that milestone next season. But the Penquis Patriots got the job done, winning the Class-C state title. "The chances turned out to be pretty good. I'm not going to tempt fate. I know when to get off the train," said Hamlin.
Hamlin has announced that after 31 years, 401 wins, and 17 seasons with two Gold Balls from Penquis, he is retiring from coaching.
"Of all those experiences, pretty tough to beat Saturday night [State Championship win]. Because it was the last game in the state, last game in the Auditorium, intense as all get out. It came down to the wire and we were fortunate enough to walk out there with a championship," said Hamlin.
Hamlin explained that a major factor in his decision was the knowledge he would leave his successor well equipped, with a group of talented guys who know what it takes to win games.
Hamlin does plan on staying at Penquis as Athletic Director, and will teach for at least one more year.
