The short, strange saga that was Tim Tebow's time with the New York Jets is over.

The team announced the release of the controversial quarterback Monday morning, just days after drafting West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Tebow was the subject of a QB controversy during his one season with the Jets, having been acquired in a trade with the Broncos last March.

He played in 12 games, but was never given the chance to start, despite a poor season by Mark Sanchez, and was even passed over for third string quarterback Greg McElroy when Sanchez was sidelined.

“We have a great deal of respect for Tim Tebow. Unfortunately, things did not work out the way we all had hoped. Tim is an extremely hard worker, evident by the shape he came back in this offseason. We wish him the best moving forward,”
coach Rex Ryan said in a statement.
