ORONO - The Maine Black Bears came close last year to capturing their second-straight America East softball title, and if the coaches of the conference are right, they'll be in contention once more in 2018.

America East's preseason coaches poll dropped Wednesday afternoon, and the Black Bears sit tied for second place with 26 total points. Knotted up with them are the River Hawks of UMass Lowell, who also sit seven points back behind last year's regular season champion Binghamton. Stony Brook, Albany, UMBC and Hartford round out the poll. Maine did not receive any first place votes.

The Black Bears upset Binghamton in the America East Tournament last year, before falling to Albany in Game 2 of the Championship Series. They bring in seven freshmen this year, while returning 12 letterwinners from last season.
