Strasbourg, France (SportsNetwork.com) - Third seed Kirsten Flipkens came up an opening-round loser Monday at the Strasbourg International tennis event, a final French Open tune-up.
Kazakhstan's Zarina Diyas drove out the Belgian Flipkens 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3 on the red clay at Strasbourg Tennis Club.
Meanwhile, Aussie Casey Dellacqua took out fifth-seeded Russian Elena Vesnina 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 while eighth-seeded American Alison Riske defeated Brazilian Teliana Pereira 6-3, 6-3 on Day 1.
In other action involving Americans, Madison Keys got past Spaniard Maria- Teresa Torro-Flor 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 and Vania King overcame Argentine Paula Ormaechea 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.
Also advancing were Croat Ajla Tomljanovic and French wild card Claire Feuerstein.
This week's top seeds are American Sloane Stephens and France's own Alize Cornet, with both women seeing action on Tuesday. Cornet is the reigning Strasbourg champion, having beaten Czech two-time runner-up Lucie Hradecka in last year's final, and was the runner-up here in 2012.
