The Washington Nationals added a right-handed hitter to their bench on Monday, acquiring outfielder Scott Hairston and a player to be named from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for right-hander Ivan Pineyro and a player to be named.
Hairston, 33, signed a two-year, $5 million free-agent contract with the Cubs last offseason but rarely played because of the lack of left-handed starters in the National League Central.
His career batting average/on-base/slugging line against left-handed pitching is .268/.317/.496. He batted only .172 for the Cubs, but had eight home runs in 99 at-bats.
The Nationals figure to use Hairston in the role currently occupied by Tyler Moore, a second-year player who is batting only .151/.195/.283. And the Nats will control Hairston through next season.
