Bouchard wins Nuremberg opener

Nuremberg, Germany (SportsNetwork.com) - Second seed Eugenie Bouchard was an easy opening-round winner Monday at the Nurnberger Cup tennis event.

The promising Canadian whipped Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-0, 6-3.

Bouchard's second-round opponent on Tuesday will be Aussie qualifier Anastasia Rodionova.

In other action involving seeds, No. 4 Ukrainian Elina Svitolina handled Czech Iveta Melzer 7-5, 6-4; Czech Karolina Pliskova upset No. 5 Austrian Yvonne Meusburger 6-3, 6-4; No. 7 Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia outlasted Israeli qualifier Julia Glushko 6-4, 5-7, 7-5; and No. 8 German Annika Beck whipped Slovak Jana Cepelova 6-2, 6-3.

Other Day 2 wins came for Rodionova, German Dinah Pfizenmaier, Italian Karin Knapp, Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova, Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck, and Spanish qualifier Beatriz Garcia Vidagany.

This week's top seed is German favorite Angelique Kerber, who will open her week against New Zealand's Marina Erakovic on Tuesday.

This is the final tune-up for the French Open, which starts Sunday in Paris.
