LePage Proposes School Voucher Program

AUGUSTA - Governor LePage is proposing a school voucher program for low-income students.

The 530-thousand-dollar initiative would help pay for students' transportation, tuition and residential costs of non-religious private schools or public schools, outside of the districts where they live.

Students qualifying for the free and reduced lunch would be eligible, which is about 44-percent of Maine students. Opponents say it takes money away from schools that are already hurting.
