Bangor City Council Joins in Repeal of 1996 Marriage Act

BANGOR - Bangor is now one of the cities that has joined with others across the nation to repeal a nearly two-decade old marriage act.
The Bangor City Council has partnered with municipalities across the U.S. in calling for the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act.  The 1996 law bans the federal government from recognizing marriages between gay and lesbian couples.  Council President Joe Baldacci says the defense against marriage act is antiquated and discriminatory.

The council plans to sign on to a legal brief to the U.S. Supreme Court...a decision the court will most likely make in June.
