First Elver Lottery in Seven Years Awards Four Winners

Augusta - Maine's elver industry is a competitive business that's nearly impossible to break into... but this week, four new elver licenses for the 2013 season were awarded by the Maine Department of Marine Resources.

After last year's season when elvers went for $2,000 a pound, 5,000 Mainers applied for the license, with only four available slots.

The lucky fishermen, selected through a lottery, are Mark Wakem of Poland, Alyssa Orestis of Searsport, Meredith Perry of Spruce Head, and Garret Lemoine of Swan's Island. The new licenses were issued to replace the individuals who did not renew theirs last year.

The last elver lottery was seven years ago. This year, elver season begins at noon on March 22nd and ends at noon on May 31st.
