Committee Kills Online Sales Tax Exemption

AUGUSTA -  Mainers who shop online won't get off the hook on paying state sales tax.
The legislature's Taxation Committee has killed a proposal to exempt the first one-thousand dollars of Internet purchases from out-of-state companies from Maine's five-percent sales tax.
The vote was unanimous.
Local governments and retailers opposed the bill, and argued that it would give out-of-state businesses an unfair advantage over stores located in Maine.
