Maine To Gather Information For Gun Database
Maine is beginning to collect the names of mentally ill people who pose a threat to society so they can be added to the national database used to check gun buyers.
The names will be turned over to Maine's courts, which will forward them to the FBI this spring.
The FBI manages the database, and federal law bans mentally ill people from owning guns.
Maine has long been unable to add the names of the mentally ill to the background check database.
