A pack of cigarettes could cost about eight dollars in Maine, if the American Lung Association of the Northeast gets its way.
The association is calling for a dollar-50-a-pack increase in the state's cigarette tax.
Supporters say that would raise an additional 50-million dollars a year that could go into the Medicaid budget.
Anti-smoking advocates also say eight-dollar-a-pack cigarettes would give smokers an incentive to quit and discourage people from starting to smoke.
