Hundreds Honor, Remember National Guard Lt. Colonel Backus

FARMINGTON - More than 500 people turned out in Farmington yesterday to honor and remember National Guard Lieutenant Colonel Michael Backus.

He died last Monday while on duty at Camp Keyes in Augusta.

During 22 years of military service Colonel Backus flew helicopters during deployment to Iraq and held a number of high-ranking command positions in the National Guard.

He is survived by his wife and three sons.

Clay was hired by WVII/WFVX as a morning anchor for FOX BANGOR's 7AM News Hour and as reporter for the 6,10 & 11 o’clock news in July 2011.

He graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington where he received his B.A. in Journalism. Clay has worked at Fox National News in New York, WTIU in Indianapolis and the Big Ten Network.

In his free time, Clay is a firefighter for the Holden Fire/Rescue Department in Holden and is an avid hockey fan.
