Fatal Accident in Readfield Leaves One Dead

READFIELD - State authorities are now saying speed and distracted driving were large factors that led to a fatal car accident in Readfield that has left a young woman dead and another person injured.

It happened late Saturday afternoon when police say the 17-year-old male driver of Wayne was traveling east on Lane Road and failed to stop at the stop sign.

That's when his truck slammed into a tree head on, Killing passenger 20-year-old Gabriel Soucy of Mt. Vernon who died at the scene.  The driver was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with what police are describing as non-life threatening injuries.

State police spokesman Steve Mcausland tells us that the weather was foggy and roads were wet at the time.

State police reconstructed the crash.  Once the investigation has been completed, the file will be reviewed by the District Attorney's office.  At this time no charges have been filed.
