Basketball Team Rallies Behind Injured Star

CORINTH - When the Lady Devils of Central High School took the basketball court Thursday night, they were without a teammate, friend, and leader. An early Wednesday morning car crash landed their starting senior guard Max McHugh in the hospital with serious injuries.

"For Max" -- that's how the Central High School girls' basketball team began their game against lee Thursday night. Just one day earlier, standout senior guard and multi-sport athlete Max McHugh was seriously injured in a car accident on her way to school.

According to a Central teacher, who was just a few cars behind the accident, Max collided with another vehicle head-on.

When Max's coach visited her in the hospital before surgery on a broken leg, Max's first words were: "I'm sorry." Coach Diane Rollins says that Max always puts the team first, and felt like she had let them down. Rollins assured Max that was not the case.

In honor of Max, her teammates hung her jersey on the wall of the gym, wore wristbands embrodiered with her #10, and her favorite color ribbons in their hair. Unfortunately the Central Lady Devils would go on to lose the contest... however it was only by a few points, an outcome many did not think would be possible without the star player on the court.
