LePage Readying Bills To Tighten Welfare Rules

AUGUSTA - Governor Paul LePage's administration is submitting three bills that would tighten Maine's welfare rules.

One measure would ban people convicted of drug felonies from receiving public assistance, while another could allow the Department of Health and Human Services would not allow using food stamps to buy soda.

A third bill could give the DHHS commissioner more subpoena powers.

That measure is possibly aimed at fighting welfare fraud.
