Teachers Seek Guidance On Restraining Students

Augusta - Teachers from around the state are asking the Legislature to better define what they can and can't do to restrain violent and disruptive students.
The state Department of Education instituted a rule this year that told teachers they could not physically restrain students except as a last resort, and only in the most extreme cases.  Teachers say that they need guidance because classrooms are being disrupted by physically violent students who are damaging property and interrupting teaching time.  A spokesman for the Maine Education Association thinks administrators may have erred on the side of caution in fear of lawsuits if they handled a situation badly.
