Gubernatorial Candidates Respond to State of the State

STATEWIDE - Governor Paul LePage delivered his State of the State address last night. Now, the two men running against him are speaking out.

In his third State of the State address, Governor Paul LePage hit on a range of topics, from energy to drug reform, asking lawmakers to think about the big picture, saying, "We have to move forward. We must be bold and we must have the courage to make tough decisions."

LePage highlighted some of his accomplishments while governor, saying the state's unemployment rate has dropped to 6.2%, the lowest Maine has seen since 2008.

But he says this isn't about him, maintaining "we should not be here tonight focusing on the next election.

Independent gubernatorial candidate Eliot Cutler couldn't disagree more - referring to the address as a "campaign speech."

Democratic candidate Mike Michaud agreed, telling ABC 7 and Fox 22, "He's allowed ideology and partisanship to stand in the way of progress and opportunity for hard-working families. Mainers deserve better."

LePage reaffirmed his stance against expanding Medicare. Cutler disagrees and takes issue with LePage referring to healthcare coverage as welfare.

"Providing universal access to preventive healthcare for all Maine women, men, and children is both an obligation that we have and the most financially intelligent thing we can do," says Cutler.

Bipartisanship was one thing all three men did agree on, calling on lawmakers to work together to move Maine forward.
