Lawmakers Debate Bill to Crack Down on Repeat OUI Offenders

AUGUSTA - A public hearing was held Monday for a bill that looks to crack down on drivers convicted of operating under the influence, more than once.

Current Maine law will charge a drunk driver as a repeat offender if there is a prior conviction from the last ten years.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Tim Marks (D), aims to expand that 'look back' time to 15 years.

Over 150,000 people have been convicted of operating under the influence in Maine over the last 3 decades.
