Local College Student Leads Fundraising Effort for Sandy Hook

ORONO - Sammy Laverdiere, a University of Maine student from Auburn has been busy making candles and green ribbon pins, the colors of the Sandy Hook Elementary School, for a small donation.
Laverdiere says she's already raised $700 so far, and that money will go directly to the school for things as small as recess accessories or journals for the students trying to cope in the wake of such a horrific tragedy.
You can make contributions at a table set up inside Memorial Union on the University's campus. A $1 dollar minimum is requested for a ribbon, and an $8 donation is recommended for the homemade balsam fir and lavender scented candles.
If you are not from the area, Laverdiere is accepting donations by mail or PayPal at
Donations will be collected through January 10th, and after Laverdiere will be traveling down to Newtown, Connecticut to deliver the donation herself.
