OLD TOWN - A group of local middle school students received a donation today that will allow them to explore STEM education, outside of the classroom.
Students at Leonard Middle School received a big surprise Friday, a shock to even their teacher, Mrs. Bailey, who had helped her class enter a contest to win a grant for science and math-based learning.
Bailey's group of 7th grade girls came up with a unique idea for their submission into the contest, earning them $1,000 from S.W. Cole Engineering.
Funds that will go toward a "science, technology, engineering, and math" related field trip to be decided on by the group.
Leonard Middle School was the last of eight schools awarded this year as part of the "Dig into Science" program: three in Maine, four in New Hampshire, and one in Vermont.
