MAINE - Despite steeper competition than ever, nine Maine locations have made a list of the nation's top rural hospitals.
The Leapfrog Group, a national rating agency, announced the recipients of the top hospital awards for 2013 just this week.
A complete list of the organizations being recognized here in the Pine Tree state:
Blue Hill Memorial Hospital (Blue Hill)
Calais Regional Hospital (Calais)
Charles A. Dean Memorial Hospital (Greenville)
Down East Community Hospital (Machias)
Houlton Regional Hospital (Houlton)
Inland Hospital (Waterville)
LincolnHealth (Miles Campus) (Damariscotta)
Sebasticook Valley Health (Pittsfield)
Stephens Memorial Hospital (Norway)
The list is compiled based upon judgements of various areas of quality and patient safety. This year's annoucement shows a positive trend in the state, as five hospitals made the list last year, while just one location was recognized in 2011.
