ORONO -- A special anniversary this weekend coincides with the University of Maine's 2013 homecoming...
On the morning of October 19, 1963, President John F. Kennedy arrived in Orono to deliver the keynote address at a special university convocation.
Longtime Bangor resident Dick Shaw was 11-years-old, and in the old grandstand with his mother, sister and brother.
Shaw saved a program from that day, along with several newspaper clippings.
"It was almost like a prince or a king coming just eight miles up the road," said Shaw. "My mom and I, just three years before, had seen the president at Bass Park. He was a Democratic candidate then."
Shaw remembers the Stearns High School band's stirring performance leading up to the president's speech.
Kennedy's appearance was just 33 days before his assassination in Dallas.
Shaw says JFK was wearing the same blue necktie he'd worn in Orono, when he was gunned down in Dealey Plaza.
