MOUNT VERNON - A lifelong crusader for organic farming in the state of Maine has passed away.
Russell Libby was longtime director of the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association.
He died Saturday after a year-long battle with cancer.
Libby was at the forefront of the local food movement, arguing since 1977 that small farms are essential to Maine's long-term stability.
The organic farm operator was active in local government, serving as a selectman in the town of Mount Vernon.
He leaves a wife and three daughters.
