Navy Converting Communications Center To Electric Power

MACHIAS -  The Navy is moving to save money and improve air quality in the Machias area.

The Navy plans to convert power at the half-century-old Cutler communications center from its antiquated diesel generating system to Bangor Hydro Electric Company's power grid.

The Navy's putting on an open house today to explain the project, which will reduce diesel emissions and save close to four-million-dollars a year in fuel costs.

The open house runs from 4 to 8 p.m. at Rose Gaffney Elementary School in Machias.
