BANGOR - A man from England is behind bars tonight, facing charges after police say he flew to Bangor to have sexual relations with a 13 year-old girl from Levant.
26 year-old Nicholas Cheese of Oxford, England, made his initial appearance in a Bangor court room today. He's accused of gross sexual assault and sexual exploitation of a minor.
Bangor police say they were recently notified by the girl's father.
"Detective Whitehouse had information from a father of a 13 year old girl from Levant that this girl had met a male online from England, who had come over here, rented a hotel room for them both, and had sexual relations with his daughter," said Sgt. Paul Edwards of the Bangor Police Department.
Cheese was interviewed by police at a local hotel where he was staying before he was arrested and taken to the Penobscot County Jail.
He's being held on $100,000 bail and was ordered to surrender his passport.
Police say the girl was not at the hotel room at the time of the arrest.
