Orono - To combat the issue of unhealthy children who are overweight or obese...you may think you need a restrictive lifestyle. But researchers at UMaine are doing quite the opposite...using food to help the fight.
They'll be conducting cooking classes with both the child participants and their famlilies, promoting healthy eating and family mealtimes. Another part of the study will focus on time that family can spend together - doing physical activities and just plain having fun.
Once the study is conducted the research will be compared to data from 5 other states.
The program is currently accepting participants. Families must have a child who is 9 or 10 years old and everyone must be free of food allergies or activity-related medical restrictions.
