Regulators Look to Slash Shrimp Catch Quota or Cancel Season Completely

AUGUSTA - Maine's shrimping season is in jeopardy. But as of a meeting this morning it is no longer on the chopping block entirely...something many fisherman had feared could happen.

At first regulators proposed closing down the season all together: no shrimping at all. They pointed to their 2012 report, which they say shows there simply aren't enough shrimp, and they aren't reproducing fast enough to replenish their populations to healthy levels.

Today, decision makers agreed no moratorium, but instead a very limited season...which at this point may start in mid-January. Fisherman called the total loss of a season the absolute worst case scenario. And even though a short season with a limited catch is still a hardship...they say something is better than nothing.
