CASTINE - The state of Maine is officially creating offshore wind power. On Thursday, partners in creating North America's first offshore wind turbine, flipped the switch.
A thousand feet off the coast of Castine, history is in the making.
On Thursday at 12:40 pm, the world's first offshore wind turbine with a concrete base began generating electricity. And while this prototype is only an eighth of the size of the soon-to-come full scale turbines, the possibility of thousands of jobs and clean renewable energy has folks in the industry, excited.
The full scale turbines are being designed. And the hope is to connect one to the grid, by 2016.
