State Police and the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office say a body, located Monday night, may be that of 15-year-old Nichole Cable.
Spokesman Steve McCausland says identification of the body will not take place until the State Medical Examiner's Office completes its part of the investigation Tuesday.
Officials say the remains were found around 9:30 p.m. by the Maine Warden Service at an undisclosed wooded location.
The site has been secured for the night.
Recovery of the remains will begin at daylight Tuesday.
McCausland says Cable's parent were informed of the developments.
A news conference is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office.
