ORONO - Today the University of Maine's Advanced Structures and Composites Center, unveiled a first of it's kind offshore wind turbine, that will deployed off the coast at the end of the month.
Standing approximately 65 feet tall when assembled, this proto-type wind turbine will be deployed off of Maine's coast at the end of the month.
It's just an eighth of the size of a full-scale wind turbine they hope to launch in 2016.
The scale model of the VolturnUS was unveiled Wednesday. It's the first of it's kind in the country.
The turbine has the ability to generate 5 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2030...paving the way for offshore wind technology, right here in Maine.
The turbine will be assembled at Cianbro's facility in Brewer at the end of this month, and then deployed down the Penobscot River to Castine, on June 1st.
