BANGOR - The Winterberry Heights Assisted Living Center celebrated the birthday of one of its oldest residents today.
Happiness is what Viriginia Beland says is most important thing in life, and it was quite clear that it was a happy day spent with her friends at the Winterberry Heights Assisted Living Center in Bangor as she celebrated her 102nd birthday.
"Oh, I think it's wonderful. I have nice friends, I love friends and they love me or else they wouldn't be here," Beland says.
Of course no birthday would be complete without cake, but that's not the only thing that went into preparing for this party.
"We like to personalize it a little bit. We try to get some of their favorite things involved, and we all sign a big birthday card especially when it's a big birthday like 102," Administrator of Winterberry Heights, Kelli Daunais says.
Make note that Beland is not the oldest resident at Winterberry Heights. That award goes to someone who is 103.
Despite that, the staff still tries to make sure every birthday is a grand celebration.
"I think it's special because she gets to share this with all of her friends. She's been here for a couple years, and these are her friends now. We're like a big family here so when we have birthday celebrations it's nice to be able to share it with everybody," Daunais says.
The thing Beland wants people to know about turning 102, "Well it's no different than being 10 or 50."
