ORRINGTON - Fire destroys an Orrington barn today, after a controlled grass burn gets out of hand.
Neighbor Chad Campbell snapped this photo just minutes before fire crews arrived.
Orrington, Brewer, Holden and Bucksport fire departments responded to the blaze at the corner of Pleasant Hill and River Road.
The crews were able to get it knocked down in less than a half hour, and Orrington's fire chief says the wind played a factor in fueling the flames.
"It was completely engulfed when we got here, a huge ball of fire which made it collapse," says Orrington Fire Chief, Michael Spencer, "and once it collapsed it was a matter of getting multiple gallons of water."
The owner was permitted to burn the grass on his property, and tells us the barn is insured.
A piano and furniture were among the items lost in the blaze.
