Brewer School Department Prepares to Make Staff Cuts

BREWER - Several teachers in the Brewer School Department could be receiving their letters of termination next month.

The Brewer School Committee will vote on which staff positions to eliminate to help close the nearly $1.5 million budget gap.  Employees being laid off will be named at the May meeting.

Superintendent Daniel Lee says it's not a decision he wants to make but they are running out of time waiting for any changes in Augusta.

"The only way, currently, it looks like we can get out of this is to cut these positions.  I certainly hope it doesn't actually happen...it's my hope that the Legislature will see that this is a genuine problem and seek some sort of remedy, some sort of revenue enhancement, that is not regressive."
