AUGUSTA -- Democratic leadership in the Maine House of Representatives say they've produced a bill to create what they're calling "tax fairness" in the state.
Sponsored by Rep. Seth Berry (D - Bowdoinham), the bill would add one cent to the tax rate for those making over $250,000 a year.
Berry says the changed rate would generate about $200 million in revenue in the upcoming fiscal year -- and fill half of the state budget gap.
Republicans are poised to fight the measure.
They've previously opposed raising state taxes on any Mainers in the current economic climate.
