Canadian Cyclists Cancel Summer Tour, Disappoints City of Belfast

Written by
Belfast - 2,000 Canadian cyclists supposed to tour Maine this summer, won't be doing so any more after a dispute between the event's sponsor and U.S. Customs.

Disappointment.

That's what many Belfast residents are feeling now that a highly anticipated Canadian bike tour has been called off.

The city was one of the overnight stops for the 600 mile ride.

The event -- expected to bring tens of thousands of dollars to local gift shops, restaurants, and hotels -- canceled due to a disagreement between the company sponsoring the event and U.S. Customs.

Residents we spoke with today say it's a shame. City officials though are remaining optimistic, hoping they come to a resolution in the near future so events like this, can be planned and brought to Belfast again.
