House democrats form online petition to reopen Downeast Correctional Facility

AUGUSTA - People in downeast Maine aren't giving up on the Machiasport correctional facility.

Some lawmakers and locals were outraged Friday when Governor Paul LePage ordered it closed and sent police and buses before dawn to remove all the inmates and staff.

This came as lawmakers were considering a bill to fund the facility in order to keep it open.

Maine House Democrats have now formed an online petition asking the governor to reopen the prison.

It has been signed by dozens of people.
