ELLSWORTH - State Fire Marshals are trying to determine the cause of a fire in Ellsworth.

Around 4:30 Tuesday afternoon the Ellsworth Fire Department responded to a structure fire on the Christian Ridge Road.

Smoke billowing from the area could be seen by drivers on Rte. 1A, miles away from the scene.

When firefighters arrived, an attached garage was fully involved.

Neighbors tell ABC 7 & FOX 22 the building was an apartment complex composed of four units.

One neighbor also says a man was taken to the hospital, though officials could not immediately confirm that information.

Officials were able to knock down the garage and save the main part of the house.

"Once we got water supply established, we have hydrants on both ends of this road, but it's still about a mile. But once were were able to get sufficient tankers on scene, we were able to shuttle that water in and make an effective attack on that fire," said Deputy Chief Gary Saunders with the Ellsworth Fire Dept.

Crews from Ellsworth, Trenton, Hancock and Lamoine responded to the call.

The Christian Ridge Road was shut down for a couple hours while crews fought the blaze.
