New bill will pick up tuition for National Guard members

BANGOR - Last year the University of Maine started offering free tuition to all members of the Maine National Guard.

Now, one legislator has introduced a bill to establish a fund to provide tuition money for National Guard members attending private universities and colleges in Maine.

Senate President Mike Thibodeau, R-Winterport, said "Every one of them has answered the call when our country asked them to. We want to make sure we show our appreciation. And one of the ways we can do that is through offering this free education."

According to the legislation, the tuition reimbursement would be capped at the rate charged by Maine Maritime Academy.
