Medicaid expansion under fire as having the potential to be a budget buster

AUGUSTA - The voter-approved Medicaid expansion has come under fire as having the potential to be a budget buster for the state.

However, the head of one of the state's larger workers' compensation insurers said lawmakers can take a lesson from its efforts.

During a meeting between legislators and health care professionals, Michael Bourque, MEMIC Group president, stated preventive measures will be key to keeping health care costs down. He said "We worked very hard with employers and employees to work to prevent injuries. On the healthcare side there are all sorts of bad health problems that are preventable. Diabetes, type II diabetes, some of the cancers we deal with. All of these things, we all have health behaviors that we can fix."

Bourque added every Mainer can do their share to reduce healthcare costs.
