Female genital mutilation bill would produce harsher penalties

AUGUSTA - An effort to criminalize female genital mutilation has resurfaced in this session of the Maine legislature.

The effort died in last year's session after initially garnering bi-partisan support.

One of the bill's sponsors said if this bill gets approved, Maine would have a tougher law than the federal government.

Representative Heather Sirocki, R-Scarborough, said "There are many other states that have considered unanimous support of strong laws that send a clear message. We welcome our immigrants. There are some deeply seated cultural traditions that we do not welcome."

According to Sirocki this happens in Maine, but is not publicized.
