Maine legislators to look closer at utilities in wake of windstorm

AUGUSTA - During the windstorm last October, more people lost power then during the 1998 ice storm.

Now, Maine legislators are talking a look at how the power companies handled the chore of turning on the lights.

There's also some concern the Public Utilities Commission approved a rate hike for the electric companies to pay for manpower and equipment needed to restore the power.

Senator Andre Cushing, R-Newport, said "When it comes to asking for an increase in rates, particularly at a time when we're in winter and looking at those issues, it's always prudent for elected officials to take a look at it."

Cushing said it's possible the legislatures' Utilities Committee members will find nothing needs to be done. On the other hand, he said, it's possible the utilities need closer scrutiny.
