AUGUSTA - Women's and girls' sports have made strides beyond the playing fields during the past several decades.

On the eve of "National Girls and Women in Sports Day," one legislator said the impact of women in sports goes beyond the back board and into the board room.

Assistant Senate Monority Leader Amy Volk, R-Scarborough, said "Not all generations of women have felt comfortable participating in sports, but we see more and more girls are. And we need to continue to focus not just in childhood but lifelong."

Senator Volk said studies indicate girls who participate in youth sports often carry the competitive spirit with them through life.
