Maine dog featured in "Puppy Bowl"

PORTLAND (WGME) - Prior to the patriots taking the field, Maine's very own MVP or "Most Valuable Puppy" took to the field for Animal Planet's "Puppy Bowl."

Juniper, a Stafford Shire Terrier, American Bulldog mix from the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland was selected to star on "Team Ruff" for the national football game of four legged friends.

A few months ago, Juniper joined 90 other puppies from 48 shelters across the country to compete for the Lombarky Trophy.

Sunday night, dozens met at the little tap house to cheer on the superstar and support Portland's now adopted pooch.

Jeana Roth, Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland, said "We think this is the first Maine puppy we're not sure but we're pretty sure this is the first Maine puppy to be featured in the puppy bowl which is really exciting and the fact we can shine a light on adoption and what the shelters do is really awesome."

Unfortunately, Team Ruff lost to Team Fluff 52 to 47. During the game animal planet also aired a "Pup Close" story of Juniper who spent some time at the Inn by the Sea before being adopted into her loving home.
