Fairfield man facing charges following hours-long standoff

FAIRFIELD - A Fairfield man has been taken into custody following a several-hour standoff in Fairfield.

33-year-old Kenneth Ruggiero of Fairfield is facing multiple charges, including domestic violence assault.

Around 11 o'clock Tuesday morning, Fairfield police responded to a home on West Street near Montcalm Street for reports of a domestic violence incident.

Police say after trying to contact the man, they found he had barricaded himself inside his home.

A negotiator from Waterville and the State Police Tactical Team were brought in to try to reach Ruggiero and get him to come outside.

As a result, roads in the area were closed off for most of the day.

"We closed off all the streets around that area, just as a precaution, with the fact of not knowing for sure if there were weapons or not in the home," said Sgt. Matthew Wilcox, of the Fairfield Police Dept.

Around 5:30 p.pm Ruggiero surrendered and was taken into custody.

He is currently being held at the Somerset County Jail.
