Bill would fund Downeast Correctional Facility

AUGUSTA - A hearing in Augusta Monday could have a big impact on life in Downeast Maine.

Lawmakers will consider a bill that would keep the Downeast Correctional Facility open for another year.

Governor LePage has been pushing to close the aging facility as a way to save money. But supporters said the facility is needed and argue it's also an important employer in the area.

The bill to be considered would provide $5.5million in funding.

The bill would also require the state to report on the effects a prison closure would have on the local economy.
