Man in custody following domestic violence situation, standoff in Hermon

HERMON - One man has been taken into custody following an hours-long standoff in Hermon Thursday night.

Just after 7 p.m., the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office received a report of a domestic violence situation on Route 2 in Hermon near Morgan Hill.

Sheriff Troy Morton with the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office says two family members had left the residence and said they had been assaulted by a man still inside the building.

Police say it was reported there were firearms and other weapons inside the home.

Morita's School of Dance, which is next door to the residence, was immediately evacuated.

Police then blocked off Route 2 between New Boston Road and Bog Road for about four hours while they tried to contact the man inside.

"Ongoing attempts to communicate with the person went on for several hours. And then at approximately 11:30 this evening, the special response team and crisis negotiators from the Sheriff's office engaged the person in the driveway," said Sheriff Morton.

The man was then taken into custody and transported to the hospital for evaluation.

Sheriffs have not released the name of the man and no charges have been filed yet.
