How to be successful with your 2018 new year's resolutions Featured

BANGOR - It's a brand new year, which means people all across the country are making new year's resolutions.

A fresh start to a brand new year, there's something about this time that gets people wanting to be better. But according to psychologists at Acadia Hospital, more than half of people abandon their resolutions within the first three months. With unexpected life twists, keeping up with resolutions is no easy feat. We all want to be successful, but many don't know where to start with their new goals.

"The more specific you can be, what are you going to do, when are you going to do it and have a plan is really important," said David Prescott, a psychologist at Acadia Hospital.

Sometimes starting small can help with being discouraged early, and when in doubt, call on a friend for help.

"Have a plan to check in on yourself or somebody you trust in about 3-4 weeks is a really really good idea," said Prescott.

Whether it's focusing on one day at a time or making your goals personal to you, psychologists say if you fail today, focus on what you can do tomorrow.
