Fire tears through Ellsworth woods Sunday

ELLSWORTH - Firefighters across Maine were hard at work over the weekend, fighting a series of fires that spread due to extremely dry conditions. The most recent in Ellsworth Sunday.

The Ellsworth Fire Department was called to the scene on North Street Sunday just before 5 p.m.

A large area of woods was on fire and two structures were reportedly in danger. Several crews all came out to help knock that fire down.

Ellsworth Fire Deputy Chief Gary Saunders said "Approximately 30 to 35 firefighters from all those different organizations arrived, and we were able to get a hand line around the circumference of the fire pretty quickly."

No structures were damaged thanks the quick action of the firefighters and no injuries were reported.

About one and a half acres were burned, but Deputy Chief Saunders said it could've been much worse.

The cause remains under investigation.
