Maine voters approved legalizing recreational marijuana just about a year ago. That law gave towns the option of prohibiting retail sales.
It was just within the past several days when the latest revision was inserted into the proposed bill.
The version the legislature considers next week basically makes it illegal statewide, but gives towns the option of legalizing it on a town-by-town basis.
Legalize Maine president, Paul MCarrier, said "We've already had a vote on whether cannabis is legal in the state of Maine. And we don't need every municipality to have a re-vote."
McCarrier said the original intent of the bill needs to be reinserted, even if it has to wait until the January session of the legislature. He's confident the bill as written today will be defeated by the legislature next week.
